PERA Goals

Second Grade: I can use my singing voice to match pitch on three or more pitches.

Goal: All second grade students  get a 3 or higher on the rubric below.  

Group:  All Second Graders

Time Period:  4-5 weeks

When:  Trimester 3 

 

Prerequistite:  

1.  First Grade Spring Assessment- I can use my singing voice to match pitch on two or more notes

2.  Monthly practice echo singing s-m-l with handsigns. 

    Rubric:  I can use my singing voice to match pitch on three or more notes independently.

   

    4-I can use my singing voice to match pitch on la, so, and mi independently with a confident sound and appropriate tone color. 

    3-I can use my singing voice to match pitch on la, so  and mi  independently.

    2- I can use my singing voice but not match pitch on la, so and mi independently yet.

    1- I am still learning to match pitch independently.

Materials:  Google Form  Rico PIzza Song  "Cuckoo" by Fiona Roberton ISBN:  978 0 399 16497 2

Process:  

1.  Read the book "Cuckoo" by Fiona Roberton ISBN:  978 0 399 16497 2

2.  Ask students to create sounds for charcters in the book (Vocal Exploration Warm Up)  

3.  Introduce the Cuckoo Game 

       a.  S sit in the middle of the room with their eyes closed.

       b.  T picks 1-2 students to be Cuckoo bird(s) and hide in the room.

       c.  Students sing:

            Cuckoo, Where are you?  Can you give us just one clue?

               s    m         s        s     m         s     s      m     l     s      s       m

       d.  Cuckoo bird(s) sings

             Cuckoo, Cuckoo, nanny, nanny, boo boo.

                 s    m       s    m      s   s     m   l        s     m 

       e.  If there are multiple cuckoos, they sing seperately.

       f.  S point where the birds are in the room.  They will be in different parts of the room so each S points at two birds with

            differnet arms.

       g.  T assesses cuckoo voices using assessment above.

       h.  2 Cuckoo birds choose 2 more S's to be the next birds.

       i.  Repeat 10x or until all kids have sung.  (May wish to play over two class periods)

4.  Looking at data, who needs help with singing in tune?  Who needs a quick conference about using a proper singing voice?    

      Who needs encouragement to boost confidence?  Who needs a next step?

5.  Practice for the next 4-6 music classes as a vocal warm up.  

       -T sings, class echos

       -T sings, riser echos

       -T sings, volunteers echo (Here is where you can differentiate for various levels)

       -T uses hand signs and class echos

       -T uses hand signs and riser echos

       -T uses hand signs and volunteers echo

       -T and S create a checklist of what a good singing voice sounds like.

       -S review game from first grade, "Sing me your name" p. 71 from Gameplan 1

6.  Introduce Rico Pizza Restaurant song using solfege ladder

7. T models solo singing and game

8.  T models google form assessment

9.  Play Rico Pizza Restaurant game

10.  Set up "tables" in the room along with 4 iPads with google form ready.

11.  Choose 4 waiters/waitresses and let them get iPads.

12.  Begin with the whole class singing the song and then each waiter/waitress can take orders.

13.  After students sing and take order, they quickly self assess their own performance and then bring the iPad to the manager           (T) and have a short conference.

14.  Kids go to the kitchen, bake a pizza and return to their table with the order.  

15.  A new round begins until all students sing and self assess.  

16.  New data is collected via google form.
